Decorative Concreting
More Than Just Grey
Turn Plain Concrete Into a Feature, Not Just a Surface
Plain grey concrete gets the job done, but it doesn’t have to be the only option for your driveway, patio, or path. Decorative concreting brings texture, pattern, and depth to a surface that would otherwise just blend into the background, without giving up the strength and durability of a standard concrete pour.
We work across the whole Central Coast on decorative concreting projects, whether it’s a stand-alone feature or part of a broader residential concreting job. Techniques range from natural stone texture to intricate stencilled patterns and eye-catching swirl finishes. Some are more straightforward than others, and a few take real skill to get right consistently, which is where experience makes the difference between a finish that looks sharp for years and one that looks patchy within months.
Below is a look at the decorative options we offer, so you can see what might suit your next project.
Exposed Aggregate
Exposed aggregate reveals the natural stone within the concrete mix itself, creating a textured, slip-resistant surface with real depth and character. We pour a purpose-mixed concrete, then wash back the surface once it’s partially set, exposing the aggregate underneath without disturbing the slab structurally. It’s a popular choice for driveways and pool surrounds, since it copes well with rain and everyday traffic. You can generally walk on it within a day or two of pouring, though it’s best to keep vehicles off for around a week while the slab builds up enough strength underneath.
Concrete Stencil
Concrete stencilling creates the look of brick, natural stone, or tile without the cost of laying the real thing. A paper stencil pattern is placed onto the fresh concrete, colour hardener is worked into the surface, and a release agent is applied before the stencil is peeled away once the concrete has set enough to hold its shape. What’s left behind is a crisp, repeating pattern with genuine depth and colour, not just a printed surface. Once sealed, it’s suitable for normal foot and vehicle traffic within about a month, the same as any other decorative concrete finish.
Stamped Concrete
Stamped concrete works in a similar way to stencilling, but uses textured mats pressed into the surface rather than a flat pattern, giving a more three-dimensional finish that mimics natural stone, slate, or cobblestone. Colour hardener and a release agent are applied before the mats are pressed in while the concrete is still workable, then lifted away to reveal the imprint underneath. It’s a good option if you want a more textured, tactile surface than stencilling provides. Light foot traffic is usually fine within a couple of days, with the full month-long cure needed before regular vehicle use.
Cove Finish
Cove, also known as a swirl or fan finish, is created by hand-trowelling the surface in overlapping semi-circular arcs once the concrete has been levelled and floated. Done well, it gives a soft, textured look with genuine grip underfoot, without the harsh lines of a broom finish. It’s one of the trickier finishes to get consistent across a full driveway or path, since every arc needs to line up evenly by hand. We’ve built up the technique over plenty of jobs, and it holds up to the same walking and driving timeframes as any standard concrete pour.
